Big Spring Park
The Big Spring was the site of Alabama’s first public water system. By 1900, the Brandons had constructed a pump house, two smokestacks, and the Huntsville Ice and Coal building, which is the current Huntsville Utilities Building at 112 Spragins Street NW. The Brandons also supplied over 500,000 bricks for the city’s sewer system.

Before the spring was a gathering spot for Huntsvillians, it was the site of Alabama’s first public water system. Through a competitive bid process, the City of Huntsville awarded the Brandons contracts to build the pump house, two smokestacks, and the Huntsville Ice and Coal building, the site of the Huntsville Utilities Building at 112 Spragins Street NW. The City also tapped the Brandons to provide over 500,000 bricks for the city’s new sewer system.
