Point 4: Baker-Helm Building

101 Washington St.

This c. 1887 building is the first constructed by Henderson Brandon & Son.  The Brandons completed the full job in forty-one days. Huntsville newspapers used this feat to praise the efficiency and expertise of Black labor, paving the way for the Brandons’ success.

Both the appearance and use of this building have changed over time, housing both a  grocery store and various clothing stores. During the 1950s, the building’s right bay was part of the F. W. Woolworth store. Subsequent owners restored the building to its current appearance.
