The cornerstones of education, entrepreneurship, and economic independence bore fruit in the early twentieth century. Restaurants, barber shops, clothing stores, churches, theaters, created a vibrant center of black culture and commerce on Church Street. Urban renewal forced many of these businesses to relocate west or north of downtown in the 1960s.
